Windy city wine tastings

The Regional Wines & Spirits tasting calendar 2017…

It’s official. The biggest specialist wine store in the Wellington region has new owners, a new manager and a new tasting programme, which I’m thrilled to take part in hosting again this year at Regional Wines & Spirits.

The world of organic wine

Thursday 16 February 6pm to 8pm

This tasting will look at what makes a wine organic, why it is better for the planet and what the words biodynamic, ‘natural’ and orange wine actually mean when it comes to the taste, health profile and quality of what’s in your glass. These are growing trends in the world of wine today and we will cover a wide range of interesting alternative wine styles in this tasting.

New wave Kiwi wine styles

Thursday 23 March 6pm to 8pm

What’s the difference between a light bodied Albarino or Arneis and a fresh ‘n fruity Pinot Gris or Gruner Veltliner? And should we be interested in and drinking the tip of the new wave wine iceberg that’s taking over bar and restaurant wine lists? And why isn’t there more Chenin Blanc around when New Zealand ones taste so good?
Come and check out a bunch of beauties with us on the tasting table, and give us your five cents’ worth on which wine you think should be the next big thing.

Wine 101 – the next level

Thursday 13, 21 & 28 April

Last year I launched Wine 101 at Regional Wines to two packed out courses; this year we are upping the ante and taking these tastings to the next level. If you enjoyed learning about Syrah and Saint-Joseph AC in France, about Malbec from $12 to $40 and about the best Sauvignon Blancs in the Southern Hemisphere, come and check out the new range of wines we will highlight in this three night course.

Three nights at $40 a pop is outstanding value for money to taste over $1000 of wine all up, to learn how to pick up the clues that red wine colour offers in terms of its most likely origin and to understand how to  choose between the good, the great and the wines that wow you the most.

More tastings will be scheduled as the year rolls on. We look forward to seeing you at these starters.
