Day 22 lockdown, a toast to Denis Irwin

Today’s wine for lockdown is  in memory of the late, great Denis Irwin, who passed away on 10 April and was one of Gisborne’s and New Zealand’s modern wine pioneers, whose role in Gisborne with luscious, aromatic, intensely varietal Gewurztraminer was the tip of a long iceberg of success.

Denis had a full and interesting life and I count it as a great privilege to have met and tasted wine with him many times. His warmth and open mindedness will be much missed by all in the New Zealand wine industry, now and going forward.

Here’s to Denis Irwin.

Wine for day 22 in lockdown

17.5/20

2019 Miner’s Right Pinot Gris Central Otago 13.3% ABV, $25

This high priced Pinot Gris from Alexandra is a great expression of the most southern of all sub regions in Central Otago. Its high acidity adds balance to its medium body, fresh citrus flavours and ripe stonefruit notes. This wine highlights the potential and challenge of edgy wine regions.
