How to… spot a wine bargain
This column was first published as Cheers in Living magazine in The Herald on Sunday, Auckland, New Zealand, 26 October 2014
A friend of mine has an uncanny knack for bargains; exotic low priced holidays, designer clothes and unusually good shoes are her specialities. But when it comes to wine, she dials (before drinking) to ask me for the best bargains. Last week she suggested that I share my top 10 best under $20 wines because they all score 5 out of 5 for value as well as being affordable. So, here are three wines that always over deliver; a rising star from Sicily; a black beauty from Argentina and an underrated white from New Zealand.
Sicily’s secret red
La Mura Nero d’Avola, $10 to $15; at New Worlds or Prodotti d’Italia.
2012 Urban Uco Malbec O’Fournier $19.95; from Accent on Wine, Parnell and Fine Wine Delivery Company, Auckland or phone (09) 378 9463.
2011 Babich Cowslip Marlborough Riesling $14 to $18, widely available.
The Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration from 29 to 31 January 2015 has just opened registrations: www.pinotcelebration.co.nz
Look out for
The new Monteith’s Lightly Crushed Cider cruises in at 2.8% alcohol and is fresh out now.
