Top drop under $20… Chingol Carmenere

2015 Chingol Adventurous Bird Carmenere 12.5% ABV $11.99

3.5 stars

It’s easy to be seduced by this wine from the first sip, which is all about ripe, dark, impressively flavoursome blueberry type flavours, which suggest a warm climate and a late ripening grape – which is exactly what Carmenere grape needs and is. Carmenere is originally from Bordeaux in the south west of France, where only a smidgeon remains. Today, Carmenere’s spiritual – and most plentiful – home is Chile. This is outrageously good value for money and a super tasty drop too. Firm smooth tannins, high balanced acidity, ripe soft dark fruit flavours, medium finish, screwcap – very good value. Tasty.
