Orlando Wines launch in New Zealand

Australia’s Orlando wines has relaunched its wines in New Zealand this month with two new ranges, including The Legends, which incorporates the great classic Eden Valley Steingarten Riesling and New Heroes. Details of both ranges and their prices are below.

The company dates back to the early days of winemaking in South Australia when it was founded by the Gramp family in 1874.

I have reviewed three highlights that resonated strongly.

2019 Orlando Steingarten Eden Valley Riesling RRP $45
The first vintage of this classic lime-zest-on-speed Eden Valley Riesling was 1967 which was launched in 1968, initially as a single vineyard wine – one of the great whites that put Eden Valley on the Australian wine map. It’s a beautiful expression of South Australian Riesling with its pronounced green fruit aromas and citrus zest flavours providing piercing freshness and a long finish as well as great ageability. The wine was relaunched in 2005 by Jacob’s Creek and the word Barossa appeared on the label, as a nod towards the wider source of grapes in this wine. Today, it is made solely from Eden Valley grapes and they come from two vineyards din this growing zone, including the stony soils at 400 metres altitude that is the great Steingarten Vineyard.

17.5/20
2019 Orlando Hilary Adelaide Hills Chardonnay RRP $30
It’s creamy, it’s smooth, it’s modest in alcohol with just 12.5%, making it neatly modern in style and super refreshing in taste. No high alcohol headaches here. Very fresh, very nice modern Australian style. The grapes in this wine were harvested on three days in the first half of March 2019 from the Piccadilly Blocks which make up 92% of the wine. Grapes were fermented in a combo of new and one year old French oak and blended together.

17.5/20
2015 Orlando Centenary Hill Barossa Valley Shiraz RRP $65

Deep ruby with pronounced aromas of blackcurrant leaf which lead into a full bodied, smoky aromas in this dry Barossa Valley Shiraz, which tastes youthful with its powerful but smooth backbone structure and savoury flavour notes.
