Smoky Sicilian red
It's been a weekend of record high summer temperatures in parts of New Zealand, which makes the evocatively named Fumu an appropriate wine of the week, due to its volcanic origins on Mt Etna, Sicily.
2021 Fumu Etna Rosso RRP $46.99
Fumu means 'smoke' in Sicily and this compelling red wine comes from a place renowned for its smoky background - Mt Etna. The two grapes in this wine are considered indigenous to Etna - Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, both of which combine in this delicate looking red with its compelling red currant and red berry aromas, with sit in layers of juicy, succulence supported by firm tannins and a savoury aroma that lends this wine a natural affinity to smoked foods.
Etna wines typically carry price tags that put them in the special occasion category but the distinctive savoury style and layers of fresh fruit make the output worth it.
This wine is imported to New Zealand by Master of Wine Steve Bennett, a long term importer of wine from Montalto in Italia.
