Art meets wine
Just when we (the royal 'we' - that's me, for one) thought wine in a box was a relic of bygone days, along comes a wine to prove otherwise. The new range highlights four varietals; Chardonnay, Dry Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz; all made in collaboration with South Australian artist Claire Ishino, whose role was the artwork on each two litre box. The producer is Yalumba, whose mantra for this range is something along the lines of dress to impress while also walking the sustainability talk and supporting reforestation by donating $25,000 to Greenfleet - from the sales of this range.
My tasting note
Winesmiths Dry Rosé RRP NZ $25 NZ / RRP AU $15
If boxed wine is your jam, this one appeals because it's two litres, hence has a shorter window of drinking and a longer window of freshness, as a result. Not to be taken seriously but can be seriously pleasurable on a warm sunny day, thanks to the dry raspberry and red fruit notes in this wine. Acidity is relatively low but the fresh taste remains on par with many modern rosés, provided it's kept in the fridge.
I've tasted this and the Cabernet Sauvignon in this new, limited edition range, and this is my pick of the pair. It over delivers on value for money and on taste, especially pleasant when lightly chilled. Is there any package in which rosé doesn't rock out the door, sales-wise?
