Wine of the week from southern France

French holidays may be off the agenda for a little while yet, due to the current global pandemic but dreams are free and the wines from the sunny south of France are also a lot more affordable than a plane fare and time spent there. It’s not quite the same thing… although a few sips of this lush dry white could easily lull you into thinking you’re sitting in the sun dappled courtyard of a chilled Mediterranean village.
That was the thought in mind when choosing this wine of the week.

2019 Heritage de Calvet Cotes du Rhone $21.99
Southern Rhone white wines are incredibly likeable for their dry, full bodied and interesting flavours; typically blends of well known Viognier with its lush personality and full body, and lesser known white grapes like Marsanne and Roussanne (hard to ripen but adds a wow taste to dry whites from the Southern Rhone).
This is an outstanding wine with really delicious lemon zest flavours leading into a smooth, full body and totally dry wine with a long finish and savoury, nutty notes. Tasty and so affordable. It’s sealed with a screwcap.
